You leave four boxes on the porch at 8am. They are gone by lunchtime. Then what?
It is a reasonable thing to wonder, particularly if the books mattered to you. Here is the actual journey, start to finish, with nothing dressed up.
1. We collect, anywhere from Waco to San Antonio
You book a time, leave the boxes out, and we take them. You do not need to be home. There is no charge, and there never has been.
2. Everything gets sorted by hand
Every box is opened and every book looked at. This is the slow part and there is no way around it, because the difference between a $1 paperback and something genuinely collectible is often a line on the copyright page.
Books come out in roughly three streams: good condition and sellable, well-loved but perfectly readable, and beyond saving.
3. The good ones go on the shelf
Sellable books go to our shop at Lakeline Mall, or online at affordable prices. This is what funds the whole operation — the van, the fuel, the time. Free pickup is only free because the resale pays for it.
Anything unusual, old or signed gets looked at more carefully. Occasionally something arrives that is worth real money, and that is always a good morning.
4. The well-loved ones go in the bags
Books that are fine to read but not worth listing individually go into our $35 Fill-a-Bag sales. Around 25 books for $35, which is roughly $1.40 each.
This is where most donated paperbacks end up, and it is the part we are proudest of. A family can walk out with a month of reading for the price of a takeaway.
5. What is left goes on to someone else
Books that will not sell are not pulped. They go to schools, to libraries asking for specific titles, and to little free libraries around Central Texas.
6. Only the genuinely ruined gets recycled
Mould, water damage, missing covers. It happens, and when it does the book goes to paper recycling rather than landfill. This is why we ask you to keep anything damp out of the boxes — one mouldy book can spoil the rest before we reach it.
The honest bit. We are a business, not a charity. Donated books pay our wages. We think that is a fairer deal than it sounds — you get a free collection and no landfill, we get stock, and someone in Cedar Park gets a $1.40 paperback. Everyone in that chain does better than if the books had gone in a skip.
What we take
Books of every kind, plus audiobooks, CDs, DVDs, VHS, vinyl, board games, puzzles and video games. Textbooks and old editions genuinely welcome — they are the first thing most places refuse.
