Nothing is alphabetized. Nothing is sorted. That is not an apology — it is the whole point, and the people who understand it leave with the best books.
Our Fill-a-Bag Sale runs at Lakeline Mall in Cedar Park. You pay $35 for a bag and fill it with as many books as you can fit. Bags are provided. Most people get around 25 books in, which works out at roughly $1.40 each.
After running these for a while, we have noticed the difference between people who leave delighted and people who leave with four paperbacks. It is not luck. Here is what the first group does.
Come with time, not a list
If you arrive looking for one specific title, you will probably be disappointed. The stock is whatever came through our donation pickups that month, which means it is genuinely unpredictable.
Come instead with a general sense of what you like. The people who do best treat it as a treasure hunt rather than a shopping trip, and they allow an hour at least.
Start at the bottom of the pile
Everyone browses the top layer. The top layer has been picked over by everyone who came before you. The good stuff is usually two or three books down, which is exactly why digging is half the fun.
Bring a friend
Two sets of eyes genuinely beat one when nothing is sorted. The usual arrangement is one person per section, calling the other over for anything interesting. Couples and friends consistently fill better bags than people on their own.
Pack the bag properly
Spines down, flat, like a filing cabinet rather than a shopping basket. Paperbacks in the gaps. People who stack their books carefully fit noticeably more in than people who drop them in loose.
And yes, you can buy more than one bag.
Come back on the second day
We restock every single morning. The second day is not leftovers — it is a different sale. People who come both days often say the second was better, because the shelves have been refilled and the crowd is thinner.
Bring a bigger car than you think you need
This is the advice people ignore and then regret. Twenty-five books is heavier and bulkier than it sounds, and if you buy two bags you will be glad of the boot space.
Two shops, one bag. We have two storefronts side by side at Lakeline Mall — children's books on one side, teen and adult titles next door. Your bag works in both, so families can split up and still fill one bag together.
What you will find
Board books and picture books, early readers, chapter books, middle grade and YA, romance and romantasy, fantasy, general fiction, non-fiction, religion, cookbooks. Over 20,000 books across the two units.
Because the stock comes from donations, there is always something odd and wonderful in there that nobody expected.
